How do I find inspiring speakers?

In today's world, where knowledge sharing and inspiration are essential, speakers play a crucial role in shaping events. Whether for conferences, seminars, workshops or business meetings, finding inspiring speakers is an art in itself. Fortunately, both online and offline world a wealth of opportunities to discover and invite the right speakers. In this blog, I like to share my tips and tricks for finding the right speaker for your event.

Starting point search inspiring speakers

First of all, answer the following two questions for yourself:

What does your audience look like, who is your target audience?

To choose the right inspirational speaker, it is important to accurately define the target audience. The speaker must have the capacity to captivate your audience, teach them something and strike an emotional chord. Executives of a healthcare organisation probably need to be addressed in a different way than, say, teachers. But a speaker must also fit in in terms of appearance, tone of voice and/or visual presentation. Each target group has its own needs. So know your audience, know who is present and what is going on in the industry they are in.

What is the purpose of your event?

Inspirational speakers are available for almost every conceivable topic. It is essential to clearly define what specific topic the speaker is covering.
Resilience-themed events in particular are gaining popularity, as people are becoming increasingly interested in developing mental and emotional resilience.

Other frequently requested topics include: leadership, customer focus, work happiness, inspiration, dealing with change, innovation, sustainability, education and healthcare. If it is clear what topic you want to cover and what message you want to convey, it will make your search for the perfect speaker much easier.

But how do I find them?

Now for the search. The internet is pre-eminently the place to find the right inspirational speaker. But it can also be a search for a needle in a haystack. After all, the supply is huge, and by no means all of equal quality and professionalism. That is why I have listed the sources you can trust for you:

Speaker agencies and talent agencies:

Speaker agencies are specialised platforms that represent a wide range of speakers. Besides speakers, you can also hire day chairmen, performers and presenters through these companies. Some well-known online platforms are Speakers Academy, Het Sprekershuys and de Spreker. Through their sites, you can filter by topics, experience and ratings to find the right speaker for your event. For example, Speakers Club provides training and custom coaching to novice and emerging as well as more experienced speakers.

Social media and online networking:

Social media are powerful tools to connect with inspiring speakers. Platforms like LinkedIn, Youtube and even Instagram offer opportunities to follow speakers, view their recent appearances and connect with them directly. By following relevant hashtags, on the topic for which you are looking for a speaker, such as #vector #leadership, and joining Linking Groups in your field, you can easily discover potential speakers.

Podcasts and webinars:

If we do delve into online media, I would definitely recommend podcasts and webinars. These are not only great sources of information and inspiration, but also places where you can discover speakers. Think Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Youtube. And you might also be familiar with TED Talks. Immerse yourself on this platform and watch videos of speakers who appeal to you and make notes of their style and content. Often, these are popular and professional speakers who are available for bookings for live events.

Online communities and forums:

Building on that, also take a look at online communities and forums within your field or the topic you want covered. Platforms such as Reddit, Quora and specific industry-related forums are good places to connect with like-minded people. Often, members here share their experiences with speakers and offer recommendations.

Personal recommendations and references:

The most traditional form of advertising but an oh, so valuable one: word of mouth. Ask within your professional network for recommendations and references. Colleagues, partners and even friends can share valuable insights and contacts. Personal recommendations often contribute to extra trust and ensure that you get speakers who are not only competent, but also well suited to the atmosphere of your event.

Industry events and conferences:

Offline events and conferences are not only great places to see inspiring speakers, but also to connect with them. Often, experts perform at these events and you can watch them live right away. Take advantage of networking opportunities and contact speakers after their presentations. They are often open to new opportunities and collaborations.

Universities and research institutes:

Academics and researchers are often engaging speakers with in-depth knowledge about their fields. Especially the popular topic of resilience is often related to psychology, well-being and business administration. Universities and research institutes are breeding grounds for such talent. By contacting lecturers, professors and researchers, you can find interesting speakers willing to share their knowledge.

What does an inspirational speaker cost?

Once you have a list of potential speakers, contact them and ask about their availability. Determine your budget and make sure you select speakers that fit within your financial means. You can often find rates on their website with the costs you need to think about.

Speakers, like you probably, like to be clear and transparent about rates. Choosing a speaker is an investment that delivers value, either immediately or in the longer term. Also discuss their fee structure and whether they are willing to negotiate rates. What value can an inspirational speaker add to your event?

These qualities an inspirational speaker must possess

Before you start your search, let me give you some additional tips. An inspirational speaker should give energy and hope, and get halls moving. May sound logical, but this is really important to make your event a success. Below, I highlight for you the characteristics that go with it.

  • Passion
An inspirational speaker should harbour an irrepressible passion for the topic they are presenting. Whether it is leadership, resilience, innovation or team building, their passion should be palpable. They should speak with a fervour, with their enthusiasm being contagious.
  • Powerful storytelling
As a speaker, you must be adept at storytelling. They must be able to envelop their message with gripping anecdotes and examples that capture the audience's imagination. In a business world saturated with dry figures and facts, a speaker who can turn this information into compelling stories will leave the audience on the edge of their seats.
  • Humor
Nobody, really nobody, is waiting for a boring speaker. An inspirational speaker understands the art of humour to make their message more light-hearted and enjoyable. They can make a room roar while delivering an important message.
  • Be able to motivate and activate
Being able to inspire is great, but without action, it remains just a spark that quickly goes out again. An inspirational speaker should share practical tips and strategies that actually encourage the audience to take steps.
  • Authentic
Last but not least, an inspirational speaker must be authentic. They must show their true self, without masks or facades. Audiences appreciate authenticity and will more easily connect with a speaker who is genuine and authentic.

Getting started!

Finding inspiring speakers requires a combination of online and offline efforts. By using various sources, you can discover speakers who are not only knowledgeable and experienced, but also capable of engaging and inspiring your audience. Above all, also consider the needs of your target audience and your budget. Communicate clearly with the chosen speakers about your expectations and ensure a clear agreement.
